There is also a skill named mining.
Mining is the process of extracting ore from asteroids in asteroid belts, or ice from ice belts. Each system is populated with asteroid belts, and/or ice belts, (accessible through the in-space right-click menu), and each asteroid belt contains a number of asteroids in a half ring formation or a spherical formation.
Mining consists of applying mining laser modules (high power slot turrets) to asteroids. Activating these miners will, over time, fill up a ship's cargo hold with ore. Most mining laser modules cycle after 60 seconds, at which time they will dump the collected ore to the ship's cargo hold. More advanced mining lasers, such as the strip miners or ice harvesters, cycle every three minutes, but yield a greater amount over time.
